Anti-discrimination package to assist A&TSI peoples ‘track their rights’ launched at NAIDOC opening

The Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland today launched the Tracking Your Rights information and training package for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (A&TSI) peoples at the official opening of NAIDOC week celebrations in Brisbane.

Tracking Your Rights is a social justice community information resource developed by ADCQ's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit, developed in response to the need for a user friendly resource for A&TSI peoples who experience discrimination or vilification.

Commissioner Susan Booth said "Queensland has come a long way in terms of recognising the rights of A&TSI peoples; however, discrimination and vilification remain a shameful part of our culture."

Based on an earlier national version, the package consists of nine downloadable fact sheets, posters, two brochures and a web page with a help page of links to legal and specialist help agencies and is supported by a training package delivered by members of the A&TSI unit.

The fact sheets target racial discrimination and vilification in the areas of education, housing, sport and work and provide specific information for women, young people, and lesbian, gay, transgender, bi-sexual and intersex members of the community.

"This plain English resource aims to provide A&TSI peoples with the knowledge and support to recognise and act on discrimination covered by the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act 1991."

"We are proud to be involved throughout the state at NAIDOC celebrations with regional offices in Townsville and Cairns attending events and attendance at events in Ipswich and Brisbane."

Additional resources will be developed to complement the online component with future fact sheets developed to meet community needs.

Interview opportunities: Commissioner Susan Booth of ADCQ is available for interview at the launch and telephone interview after 11.30 am.
