Media release 25 November 2011
Can life be fair for everyone?
Many Queenslanders believe it can, and on November 30 the people of Mackay and the surrounding districts will be able to have their say on the matter at a community conversation hosted by the Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland at the PCYC.
The Commission wants to know what the Mackay community thinks ... what each of you would do to make a fairer Queensland.
This is the fourteenth community forum in a state-wide series of 17 and the third to be held in our region. So far, many in the North believe the way to make our state a fairer and more inclusive place is for people to understand each other better.
As one participant in Townsville put it, 'If people knew the real stories behind others circumstances there would better understanding.'
Another decided it was all about making people feel more welcome and suggested neighbourhood street parties would build better relationships in their community.
'Human rights begin close to home,' Anti Discrimination Commissioner Kevin Cocks said. 'The preservation of these rights requires concerted citizen action. Were not just asking what the government can do, or what the Commission can do, but what every Queenslander can do to create an environment where human rights flourish.'
These conversations mark the 20th anniversary of Queenslands Anti-Discrimination Act and the Mackay forum will include short films, lots of discussion, sandwiches and a birthday cake.
