ADCQ launches Reconciliation Action Plan

The Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland (ADCQ) will launch its 2011-12 Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) on 9 August to coincide with International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. The RAP outlines how the Commission will play its part in closing the gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their fellow Australians.

The Anti-Discrimination Commission Queensland’s vision for reconciliation is for Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the First Australians, and other Queenslanders to contribute to a Queensland community that is fair, just and inclusive, where every person is treated with respect and dignity.

'Our RAP will help ADCQ achieve our vision by committing the whole organisation to working in ways that respect, value, engage and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' said ADCQ Commissioner Kevin Cocks.

The Commission’s RAP was developed in partnership with Reconciliation Australia and is based on the three key areas of Respect, Relationships and Opportunities. Actions outlined by ADCQ include:

  • Conduct an annual review of the complaints process (including number of complaints and outcomes) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to provide more accessible, appropriate and equitable service delivery to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Unit will develop a guide to best practice service delivery and case management for ADCQ complaint handlers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander complainants and advocates.
  • Publish resources specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on ADCQ website and elsewhere.

In line with ADCQ’s commitment to provide specific resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the Tracking Your Rights training package was recently enhanced to add an additional chapter on issues of discrimination that may arise when a person is involved in in the justice system.

Tracking Your Rights is a user friendly resource for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who experience discrimination or vilification. 'It is vital that we continue to provide up-to-date and relevant information to our community on social justice issues, and the addition of the justice system information to Tracking Your Rights has been in response to community need', said Liz Bond, Coordinator of ADCQ’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander unit.

ADCQ’s RAP and Tracking Your Rights information can be obtained from www.adcq.qld.gov.au or by phoning the Commission on 1300 130 670.
