Mabo Oration 2009

Mabo Oration 2009
Tom Calma

The 2009 Oration was delivered by Mr Tom Calma. Mr Calma is an Aboriginal elder from the Kungarakan tribal group and a member of the Iwaidja tribal group whose traditional lands are south west of Darwin and on the Coburg Peninsula in Northern Territory, respectively.

Delivery of the Oration was one of Mr Calma's final tasks in his capacity as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner and Race Discrimination Commissioner with the Australian Human Rights Commission.

The title of the 2009 Oration is "From self-respect comes dignity, and from dignity comes hope": meeting the challenge of social justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
